Objective: It was intended to address the main topics, relevance and particularities in the studies of Horizon Scanning (HS) and Technological Prospecting in medical devices from the perspective of an inclusive and universal health system. Methods: Searches were carried out in international technology assessment agencies, consultation in regulatory structures the programs of the HS in medical devices. Search the literature with current regulations on policies, programs and tools for the management of health technologies and technological prospecting. In addition to research on specialized websites and document with international experience. Results: The recent recommendation reports, issued by the National Commission for the Incorporation of Health Technologies, in the evaluations of health products now have a HS section. Disruptive technological innovations, whether due to innovations inherent to devices or arising from their use in health services, are considered in technological monitoring programs to inform decision makers. Conclusion: HS studies and technological prospecting are participatory, in order to involve all interested actors. For studies focusing on medical devices, broad participation and collaborative studies are essential to ensure consistency, credibility and avoid duplication of effort. Fostering the synergy of joint work between the NATS and NIT structures can collaborate in the preparation of studies on HS and technological prospecting for medical devices, anticipate demands and identify opportunities that can contribute to the resoluteness and sustainability of health services.
